New track demo… a bit different from the usual

EDIT: Limited-time demo removed.

I’ve just uploaded a new track demo, following a tentative test-airing on the kind and gentle folks at em411. It’s a little different to my usual output, actually containing intelligible vocals, and due to my vocal delivery probably has a slight eighties tinge to it. (That makes it hip, right? Or am I 18 months late to that luminous yellow and pink party?) So far I’ve been called a Bowie-esque crooner with hint of David Sylvian, Gary Numan ’09, and somewhat damningly, Flock of Seagulls.

Dissenters rest assured, I don’t plan to abandon instrumental electronica any time soon, but I will say that this was a lot of fun to record. I kind of want to put out a 7″ with a couple of synthpoppier tracks on it.

    O_O

    …words wont do justice for what this track just did to me. you’re really onto something here Chris!

    Count me in to by a 7″ – I’ll admit I think I prefer your instrumental tracks, but I just love the harmonies on this…

    this is REALgood. an ep, even an lp of this would go down really nicely :)
    you have an album of instrumental/electronic stuff coming out sometime soon, ye?

  4. Chris says:

    Thanks folks! Yep, full album of instrumental stuff in the pipeline—just waiting for all the extraneous bits to get sorted out (artwork, manufacturing, schedule—all the troublesome extra-musical stuff).

    But I would like to get a handful of tracks like this together and make a small run of vinyl etc. It’s something a bit different (for me).

    Thanks again for the kind words—I’ve been sitting on this for a while, quite apprehensive of putting it up on the net.

    nah, full vocals maybe something differnet for you but it works really well :) i’ve listened to the track heaps today and i still love it.

    I see my new wave conditioning is going according to plan. Mwahaha!

    I mean, uh, sounds good! ;)

  7. Kowarisuki says:

    It would be nice if you made an Instrumental Mix for folks who’s ear is unreceptive to words (not to be confused with wordless vocal :) ) in music, because music in this track is wonderful.

  8. Chris says:

    Okay—have taken it off SoundCloud as you can’t currently update the track source files, though they’re working on that apparently.

    Kowarisuki—sure, give me a day or so and I’ll try and have an instrumental up for you.

  9. mattt says:

    make it 4 times as long and reach further into the piece.

    @Mattt
    To be honest that’s what I wanted to avoid with this piece, wanting to get a simplified track done in a couple of days rather than messing with production tweaks for a month. Without the vocals I’m almost certain it’ll just sound like a backing track. Let’s see…

  11. mattt says:

    I can understand that. I meant composition rather than production tweaks etc. Really good job, though.

  12. Chris says:

    Okay, I’ve added an instrumental version. :)

  13. Kowarisuki says:

    Does it sound like a backing track without voice? You must be joking! It’s instrumentally rich, perhaps a little bit short. For sure my player will be playing “A Hidden Tragedy” on repeat whole next week along with “Little Boy (Ochre Remix)” and “The Melody (Balil Remix)”. And by that time I hope to receive AMND CD (because sometimes valuables are stolen at post :) )
    IMO, having listened to every Ochre track since [and including] Lemodie, it becomes fairly clear that the style has become mature and unique making Ochre one of the top IDM artists. But old style, which to my regret is abandoned now, marked in tracks like “Yugen”, “Revolver” and “GITD Trea Cylm (Ochre Remix)” also remains significant in your creative work.
    Thanks a lot for the track!

    @Kowarisuki
    You’re very welcome; glad you’re enjoying the instrumental. :)
